A hands-free, eyes-free, travel alert system for traveling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Listen to your phone play Pennsylvania Turnpike travel advisories near you, in your direction of travel. As you travel, it will automatically keep you updated. If you are not behind the wheel, you may also view advisories on a map, calculate a toll, view traffic cameras along the Turnpike and provide feedback.

You don't need to register, you don't need to sign up anywhere for anything.

Launch the hands-free app and select the "Driving Mode" option before you put your car in drive. The app uses the phone's internal GPS to locate your position and direction of travel. PA Turnpike TRIP Talk will sense when you are approaching a reported roadway condition on the Turnpike. It will start talking with streaming audio, telling you about active advisories that are ahead.

How it Works

Launch the hands-free PA Turnpike TRIP Talk application and select the "Driving Mode" option before you put your car in drive. You will hear active Turnpike advisories that are near you. Now put down the phone and focus on driving. There's nothing on your phone that you need to touch or read. Just listen for travel alerts.

PA Turnpike TRIP Talk will remain on while you drive, automatically activating when you approach an area impacted by a Turnpike advisory. The app will broadcast any travel alerts for reported conditions within a set mile-range (that you can set for yourself) of your current location.

Conditions will be broadcast once, and then the broadcast stream will go quiet until

  • there is an update to an advisory near you; or
  • you have come within range of another advisory; or
  • a set time period has elapsed (that you choose) and you want to re-hear all advisories that are still in range.

If you get a call, or make a call while a travel alert is playing, the alert will pause, and will resume playing when the call has ended.

Driving Mode Features/ Experience

You can modify several options. These configurations are saved on your phone, and are located on the TRIP Talk home screen by selecting the "Settings" option.

  • the advisory replay interval
  • the All Points advisory replay interval
  • the range (in miles) for hearing advisories

The application gives you audio player controls for Play, Pause, Stop, Skip, and Replay Current.

At any time you can turn off your phone's GPS. If you do, the app will try to estimate what advisories to broadcast. You can also turn off the GPS from within the app, and then advisories will stop playing.

You do not need to register with the PA Turnpike, or subscribe for alerts to use this app. We don't get or record any uniquely or personally identifying information about you or your phone. You will be automatically "opted-in" to send us back some anonymous travel information for statistical reporting, but it is not required. You may "opt-out" at the bottom of the main screen.

Additional "I'm Not Driving" Features

Additional "I'm Not Driving" features include:

  • A link to the PA Turnpike's webmap that displays incidents throughout the system. It also displays service plazas, dynamic message signs, traffic cameras, toll booths and planned roadwork.
  • Emergency Phone Number page which also displays your current location on the PA Turnpike
  • Toll Calculator
  • Traffic Camera listing page
  • Feedback form

These features can be found on the TRIP Talk homepage by selecting "More Features".

The Technology

The application is based upon Information Logistics' patent-pending "Open Microphone Platform" which is a queue-driven, voice-streaming technology used in combination with your phone's built-in GPS. The data for the system is the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission's travel advisory data.
